Coffee cup

Two stories are connected with this shot. The first one is kind of funny. Everybody that knows me well enough to call me a friend, probably also knows that I like to drink coffee with a coffee spoon in my cup. I have no idea why I do that. It’s not exactly practical since you have to hold on to the spoon with your thumb otherwise it will poke you in the eye. Nonetheless, there is enough friends who know to serve me coffee with a spoon in the cup and to all of them I wish very Merry Christmas.

The second story is not really a story, but rather an announcement. I have acquired Nikon D200. This is my first dSLR and it’s a blast to be able to use all of my Nikon glass on a digital body. This has been something I have been thinking about for a long time. Now I have several steady clients and I just, a few days ago, acquired two more and I needed the ability to do a variety of jobs plus the regular black and white documentary work I really enjoy. (I am probably still going to shoot a lot of that stuff on film.) All this is to say that there will be some slight changes in the content of this blog and I am really excited about it.

How good is D200? After spending a couple of days with it, I am truly impressed. Next week I have a couple of assignments that will test some of its abilities in the real world, but it’s sure nice to put on my old AF Nikkor 35-135 with a macro ability and get this kind of a sharp and colour rich image. This was hand-held at 1/20s at 1600 ISO equivalent. That’s heck of a lot of resolution - more than any newsprint can handle. To those who complain about high ISO noise – get over it. It’s freaking 1600 ISO. Have you seen what 1600 ISO film looks like? Sheesh!

Merry Christmas to all of you!
