Macak

So, tomorrow I am taking my new camera on its first ‘official’ assignment (I am also taking a backup just to be sure). I thought it would be useful to take a look at some of the well known photo forums to see what other people think about D200. Oh my god – I haven’t read so much nonsense in my entire life. Eventually, I figured this is a huge waste of my time, but I did find a fantastic resource that I would like to share.

I have no idea who Ron Bigelow is, but he certainly seems to know what he’s doing when it comes to Photoshop. His series of five articles on sharpening are very good. The first installment can be accessed here. The first two installments are very applicable to daily shooters with tight deadlines. The rest requires a bit more work and it will be more suited for the projects where you have some time to dedicated to your images. The last installment is way above my level of Photoshop comfort. All of his techniques seem to be completely ethical and, if anything, are very much focused on preserving the integrity of the original image.

This is an ISO 1600 equivalent at 1/15s, handheld. I used his layer based sharpening and the difference it made to the image is absolutely astounding.

The cat in the picture (and I apologize for the pet of the week type of shot) is Macak (pronounced Machak – Croatian for a male cat). Macak’s story has been featured on this blog about a year and a half ago.
