![]() This is Bascarsija (pronounced something like Bash-char-shia), the old Turkish quarter of Sarajevo. The place is a bustling market where metalsmiths work in silver and copper producing special coffee pots, plates, serving trays, bracelets and everything else in between. There are also excellent traditional restaurants and ice cream shops. And you can also order a proper turkish coffee. This area is a maze of streets and alleys and honestly I could spend days just strolling through. In the background, you can see the National Library building. During the war, Serbian artillery completely destroyed the building and with it some of the most precious historic and religious texts in the world. What remained after the fire is only a shell currently under reconstruction. It was one of the more barbaric acts of war aimed at destroying Bosnian cultural heritage. My first day of working went alright, there are some issues I will have to resolve in terms of the story line and photographic opportunities, but for now I am going with the flow. I’ll write more about Sarajevo over the next few days. The flight over was alright as far as Air Canada flights go. My flight attendant looked like Brian Mulroney, which is scary - nobody deserves to look like Brian Mulroney. To give AC some credit, the chicken did taste like chicken. They showed two films. The first one was called Aeon Flux (or something like that) and it started with a close up of a woman’s eye. She than caught a fly with her eyelashes. It went downhill from there. Right after that we had the pleasure of watching the Bridges of Medison County. AAAAAARRRRGGGGHHHH! I hate that movie on so many levels. And no place to run. Watching the first 20 minutes of the first movie, I learned an important thing. If I ever become an über-villain and have an army of armed-to-the-teeth thugs ready to die for me, I’ll make sure they have daily target practice. I mean, it’s embarrassing that they ALL miss ALL of the time. Montreal Airport charged me for wireless connection, Frankfurt airport wanted to, but I never managed to figure out how to actually hook up. So, kudos to Saint John Airport for providing an easy to use, free, business service that many of their passengers greatly appreciate. To the rest of the losers - get your act together. | |
