Skipping in South End, James Nachtway and TED awards, NPPA awards, and Paolo Pellegrin

We went for a walk this afternoon and saw this girl skipping in the middle of the street. South End at its best.

I have a few links I would like to share. James Nachtwey, a well known war photographer, is this year’s recipient of TED Prize. His acceptance speech/presentation is here. It is really worth watching even though it is a bit long. Also, take a look at an interview and a small excerpt from a documentary War Photographer.

Canadian national newspaper, The Globe and Mail, took a few prizes in the NPPA organized Best of Photo Journalism 2007 picture editing contest. There are some beautiful newspapers out there. Unfortunately, as you go through the list of the winners, you’ll notice that it is only a handful of names that keep appearing as the winners. The drastic cuts to newsroom staff and focus on profit are taking their tool. And where I live, all of the daily newspapers are owned by one company and most of them are unimaginative and prefer photos of bald, white, middle-aged men looking important rather then true journalism. That is very unfortunate because they have some stellar photographers on staff who are put in creative straightjackets. As far as I am aware, not one of the dailies in the province has a photo editor.

Poynter Institute has recently issued a teaser about their EyeTrack07 study. Among other things, we now know that true documentary photojournalism is what people are looking for in newspapers and on their web sites. Artificially lit portraits are usually glanced over and dismissed as PR.

Also, Check out Paolo Pellegrin’s piece on Guantanamo. Given the extreme restrictions imposed on him, I think he captured a sense of foreboding and claustrophobia that surround that place at least in my imagination.
