South End alley, advertising and Age of Persuasion

A typical South End alley.
-------------------------------

“Consumers didn’t expect to get 'what advertising promised. They just wanted that one tiny moment of hope before “Sleep-Tite Super-Soft” mattress stuck a spring into heir bottoms and the “Nature-Fresh Golden-Tropical-Fruit Elixir” turned out to taste of tar.”'
Venus, Inc. (The Space Merchants and The Merchants’ War) by Frederik Pohl and C.M. Kornbluth

If you get a chance, listen to Terry O’Reilly’s excellent radio show The Age of Persuasion. It’s by far the best documentary on advertising I ever heard and radio at it’s best to boot. The only thing CBC could do to make it better is to make it available as a podcast.
