![]() I was complaining about Maclean’s yesterday and their stupid covers, but I should have just kept my mouth shut because, sure as hell, I saw today something that even Maclean’s might find hard to match - although, you know, one should never underestimate stupidity. Benetton, a worldwide fashion brand, is no stranger to controversial and offensive advertising. In fact, they build their brand around it. In my native Croatia, people still remember the billboard featuring the blood stained uniform of a soldier with the United Colours of Benetton tagline. They even have the gall to suggest that this was seen as a symbol of peace in the region. It was plain disgusting. They have a new campaign now, ostensibly to raise awareness about domestic violence. It’s called Colours of Domestic Violence and this is what it looks like. I would love to be able to believe that the issue of domestic violence is close to their hearts, but look at it. Those ads are designed with only one purpose in mind - to move product. Matching the colour of clothes to bruises, that’s really low. If they really wanted to raise the awareness about domestic violence they could have sponsored a valid campaign by any of the national organizations working on the issue. But, what do I know... People still seem to be happy to shop there. This is Colwell’s on Rothesay Road. I am working on something at the moment and waiting for this baby to arrive so you will be stuck with these corner store shots for a little bit longer. However, I like the pattern that is emerging when I look at them all together. A small store, an ice box, a mail box, handmade advertising, country feel... I think I actually might make this into some sort of a story. Jean Gaumy is one of my favourite photographers and he is currently profiled on the Magnum site. His book Pleine mer is absolutely stunning. [UPDATE:] This is interesting. Benetton claims they had nothing to do with it... | |
