![]() Canada celebrated its 140 birthday today. As it is customary here, the fireworks blazed in the sky and I am sure that the ones on Parliament Hill in Ottawa were spectacular. Also, as it is customary, there was a lot of soul searching in the media and trying to figure out what exactly it means to be a Canadian. Toronto Star, for example, has a good series of stories, interviews and multimedia on the topic. A story on intermarriage is as good a place to start as any. Personally, I don’t feel Canadian and that is why I don’t have a Canadian citizenship even though it would make certain things easier. Canada, for the most part, has been a gracious hostess to me and it would be rather impolite to take the citizenship out of convenience. The truth is, though, that I now feel more at home in Saint John, than I would in my own home town. Yet, that does not change the fact that I still consider myself a Croatian in some deep and unchangeable way, even if I do have trouble defining what that exactly means. There is a lot of historical and emotional baggage that comes with it. Canada is home now and a truly amazing place to be in and I honestly hope that I am at least a little bit of a Canadian. | |
