Posavina horses

Posavina horses grazing in Lonjsko Polje Nature Park.

These are a local breed of strong sturdy horses with large hooves well suited for the soft marsh soil. They used to be workhorses, but as the mechanization took over, there was less need for them and they almost died out in this area. Today, they are raised for tourism purposes. Because of their good nature, they are quite in demand across the Central Europe and can be seen pulling carriages from Germany to Austria to Hungary. Park rangers in the Lonjsko Polje Nature Park hope to be able to use them for their work as of next year. They have practical advantages over motor vehicles: birds and other species in the park are not afraid of these gentle beasts and the rangers would be able to approach and monitor the wildlife much better. Some of the families that have opened their traditional homes to tourists already use posavina horse for riding tours.
