Ravlić family house

Park ranger Davor Anzil (left) and Jakša Ravlić are talking about a new project Ravlić and his family are thinking of developing in Lonjsko polje marsh. Jakša and his family live in Mužilovčica village where they own a traditional house and a farm. They have built a relatively successful blend of tourism and small organic farm business and are looking for ways to improve both.

The house is still partially used as the family residence and a small part of it (two rooms) are furnished in traditional late 18th - early 19th century style. They also have some traditional clothing and tools on display. The old stable has been turned into a dorm-style bedrooms under the roof, while the ground floor houses a restaurant. The pigsty is now a tiny office space. The traditional summer kitchen is also preserved and furnished with original furniture. The family is raising horses and provides horseback tours. Most of the food offered on the menu is produced on the farm as well or at the neighbouring farms.

Jakša and his family are taking advantage of the government grants for those willing to develop rural tourism, but are also attempting to preserve traditional breeds and customs as the essential part of the tourism offer. The grants cover the very basic cost of the restoration of the traditional wooden houses- just enough to ensure a sound roof and foundation. Depending on the condition of the house, the total cost of restoration can be as high as $1 million Canadian.
