Early French Immersion protest, And Sometimes Y, La Maison blog

This provincial government sure knows how to get the citizens out on the streets in sub-zero temperatures. These are Saint John parents staging a relatively small protest on King Square today in preparation for a much bigger one that will take place in front of the Provincial Legislature on Thursday.

The brilliant move to close the Early French Immersion program in Canada’s only officially bilingual province got a well deserved reception from scores of angry parents (like us). The government actually labeled the program ‘elitist’ even though it’s one of few that is truly opened to all students without any extra cost associated with the program. You can read the CBC story about today's protest here. Aside from the fact that children in grade one have a lot less trouble acquiring a language (And we should know: our daughter learned serviceable Croatian in four months at the age of five without the benefit of actual instruction, but only through immersion), learning a second language at an early age has significant mental health benefits. Here is an on-line version of a CBC show that dealt with some of those issues: And Sometimes Y from October last year. And here is La Maison, an activist blog advocating early French immersion.

Croatian word of the day: prosvjed: protest [pro svyed]
