From Grandma's Kitchen, rice cake

Here is a new feature on this blog and a brand new gallery. As many of you know, I love good food and love to cook. As luck would have it, my dad was rummaging through some old papers last week and found a stash of handwritten recipes on yellowed, loose sheets. My grandmother wrote most of them, but some are obviously much older than that and probably date all the way back to my dad’s grandmother. So, my dad, being a computer whiz and a lover of good food himself, decided to copy these recipes and share them with me. In turn, I will share them with you. And, of course, offer you a photo of the finished dish. So here is the first recipe From My Grandmother’s (Baka's) Kitchen.

Rice Cake

Ingredients
150g (about 3/4 to 1 cup of rice)
1.5 liters of milk (about 5 cups)
6 eggs
vanilla stick
cinnamon stick (optional)
half a lemon (optional)
200 g of sugar (about 3/4 cup)
6 tbs white wine
dark chocolate

Preparation
Preheat the oven to 180 C (375 F).
Bring milk to boil with a vanilla stick (and a cinnamon stick and lemon if using). Add rice and cook on low heat until the rice is cooked and thick.
Beat 150g of sugar (about half a cup) with three whole eggs. Add to the rice and mix well.
Pour the mix into a well greased pan (or a 12 inch cast iron skillet). Bake for about 20 minutes.
In a sauce pan on a low heat slowly beat 50g of sugar (about a quarter cup), three egg yolks and six tablespoons of white wine until the cream thickens. Let it cool.
Pour the cream over the baked cake. Decorate with chocolate shavings. Serve with tea or coffee.

Croatian word of the day: kolač: cake [kolach]
