![]() I was going through some links on Poynetr Institute’s website and spotted this piece: Multimedia: An Adolescent, but No Longer an Orphan. Go through the links because every one of them is absolutely stunning. One of the links is to a piece by freelancer Shiho Fukada on a boy with autism. Some of you may remember that some time ago I did a piece on a boy from Saint John who was also diagnosed with the disorder. What struck me with this piece was what a massive failure American health system is. This boy was not diagnosed until he was 10 years old. There is virtually no help that his mother receives from anybody. She might be driven into bankruptcy and she is even made to feel bad about it because she feels she should be able to take care of her child all by herself. Alex, the boy I photographed, was diagnosed when he was three, the parents received $1600 a month in funding to help with his therapy up until the age of five. Alex is today a well adjusted kid attending a regular school. The autism care in the province has also improved since Alex was diagnosed. Children today can be diagnosed as early as 10 or 12 months. That ensures that the therapy can start much earlier and be that more successful. There are autism support workers who help parents organize different aspects of the therapy and there is the government assistance. That’s how I want my tax dollars spent. South End scene.
