The modern tugs are equipped with Z-drive steering systems. The engines and propellers operate independently and can be rotate 360 degrees allowing for incredible maneuverability. As the captain pointed out: “I can turn this thing on a dime.” In the case of Atlantic Spruce, two 2000 horsepower engines provide ample power coupled with maneuverability, which makes the Spruce a perfect vessel for the deployment of scientific equipment. In this photo, the tug crew and the engineering crew responsible for the engineering research are reviewing safety procedures for the deployment. The captain steers the tug with the two joystick-like handles allowing him to rotate and adjust power of the engines separately. Going in reverse is actually quite easy - he simply turns around and rotates the engines 180 degrees.
