AgfaPhoto may have been the latest casualty of the new digital world, but it’s certainly not going to be the last. Many traditional camera makers are having trouble making the switch. Here is an International Herald Tribune story. I think this is a significant quote:

Leica counters that the emphasis it places on lasting quality made it difficult to take part in a digital market that changes every three months.

I tend to agree. I think that the problem is not that the digital is not good enough in terms of quality and craftsmanship. I am sure that Canon 1Ds Mark II is a fine camera. What doesn’t make sense is that the manufacturers build ragged bodies that will last 100 years in the worst possible condition, but the underlying technology is going to be obsolete in two years. Ah well, may be Leica can lead the way with camera bodies that will be simple and relatively cheap to upgrade with new technologies as those become available.

There is a new blog for Canadian journalist. Check it out.
