 I sure miss INDEPENDENT bookstores. Saint John, where I live today, has THREE (3) bookstores and all three are Coles. The selection in used bookstores is abysmal and that leaves one with the university bookstore - well stocked, but in the middle of nowhere. Thank God for Amazon.ca. For anybody with an interest in books in Croatian visit Moderna vremena. It has an excellent selection of books, reasonable prices and a cool newsletter. It’s the same kind of promotional e-mail you would get from Amazon except it actually has content you want to read. Imagine! The bookstore in the photograph was a real treasure. It had an excellent selection of books in English including translations of authors that would be virtually impossible to find in a North American bookstore. For example Sandor Marai’s Embers. The bikes in front of it belong to a group of Dutch friends who meet regularly at the store for their book club discussions. | |
